Augustus Thompson is Dead
Prominent Business Man Succumbs to Long Illness at Age of Eight-Five
Augustus P. Thompson, eighty-five years old, manager of the Buffalo branch of the Nation Lead Company, and a man long prominent in local affairs, died at 10:30 o'clock this morning at the family residence, No. 241 Porter avenue.
Mr. Thompson had been ill for several months with a complication of diseases. He is survived by eight children.
Augustus Porter Thompson was a representative of one of the pioneer families of western New York.
He was born at Black Rock, February 14, 1825. He received his education in the Lewiston and Canandaigua academies and at private schools in Buffalo. His first business experience was obtained as clerk in his father's office in Buffalo, where he remained until he became of age. He was admitted a partner in the firm of Thompson & Company, manufacturers of white lead, where he remained until 1860. He was associated with the late Edward S. Warren and Dewitt C. Weed in building the Niagara street railroad in 1860.
Later he was associated with the Buffalo Union Iron Works. He remained with this company until 1886, when he purchases an interest in the Cornell Lead company. Mr. Thompson was president for several years and later president until the company was merged with the National Lead company. Since then he has been manager of the Buffalo branch of the National Lead Company.
He has had other and various outside business interest. He was for some years cashier of the Buffalo City Bank, and a member of the board of directors. For many years he has been senior warden of St. Paul's Episcopal church. He was a member of the Buffalo Historical Society, and a life member of the Buffalo Public library and the Buffalo Fine Arts academy.
Mr. THompson was married June 9, 1853 to Matilda Cass Jones of Detroit, Michigan. The eight children surviving are: Sheldon Thompson, Mrs. William T. Miller, Alice Thompson, Mrs. Frank S. Talcott of North Dakota; Augustus Annin Thompson, Mrs. Grosvernor A. Gowans, Albert Steele Thompson and Mrs. Augustus McNair.
