Josiah was reputed to be an "abusive drunkard". Charged with murdering his wife in a fit of jealous rage, he hanged himself in his jail cell before he could be tried. According to the New Brunswick Fredonian he was buried in an anonymous grave in the "Stout family graveyard in Amwell".
