Author. Jean-Charles Emmanuel Nodier was noted for the literary influence he had on the French Romantics and who introduced a younger generation to the conte fantastique, gothic literature movement of the era with his writings. On April 4, 1824, he settled in Paris after the appointment as director of the Arsenal Library, becoming one of the leaders of the literary life in that city. With this move, he and his family had the advantage of rare books being available along with the company of authors such as Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo. He did much to encourage the French Romantics with his fantastic, masterfully written short stories. His election to the Académie Française in 1833, virtually constituted official recognition as a respectable literary, opening up a new literary territory for later generations. He was the recipient of the Knight of the Legion of Honor and a member of the National Society of Antiquaries of France. His daughter Maire, and only child, authored his biography, "Charles Nodier: Episodes and Memories of his Life," which is still in print.
