Monegasque Sovereign. Second in the line of succession to the throne of the Grimaldi dynasty as the son of Honore IV, he became Lord of the Principality at the death of his older brother Honore V (1841). He, having not been prepared for government care, had no significant influence in domestic politics but his lack of interest was largely compensated by his wife Mary Carolyne Gibert de Lametz who initiated attempts at economic and cultural reforms with the support of the Kingdom of Sardinia and at the same time, of France.
