"Rube" Hargrove, Effingham, one of Atchison county's oldest native citizens, celebrated his 89th birthday, Oct. 13, He is quite active and continues to oversee 2,000 acres of land in Brown and Atchison counties. His son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Snyder, live with him in Effingham. Mrs. Hargrove died in 1946. Hargrove was born at Monrovia, Oct. 18, 1860, the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Hargrove. There were five children and he is the lone survivor. He has one half-sister, Mrs. Nanny Waters, Cabool, Mo., and a half-brother, Lynn Hargrove at Leoti. He married Idella Pruitt and they were the parents of six children: Mrs. John Murray deceased; Mrs. Carl Snyder, Osborne; Mrs. J. R. Snyder, Effingham: Robert, Atchison; Charles and Brown, Effingham. Hargrove started farming, later became manager of one of the largest department stores in Effingham, was the first manager of the Farmers' Elevator in Effingham, was in the real estate business and later owned is own grocery store. For several years he has been managing farms.
