GRAND OLE OPRY'S ZEKE CLEMENTS DIED JUNE 4: - June 17, 1994

Grand Ole Opry star and Dora native Zeke Clements has died of complications associated with surgery. He was 82.

An accomplished songwriter, Clements and his band, the Bronco Busters, first appeared on the Opry in the 1930s. He went on to host a morning radio show in Nashville in the early 1940s and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in the late 1970s.

His songs included ""Smoke on the Water,'' recorded by Red Foley and the No. 1 country hit of 1944, and ""There's Poison in Your Heart,'' a hit record by Kitty Wells in 1955.

Clements died June 4 in Nashville. He was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Madison, Tenn., June 8, ac cording to Clements' niece, Charlene Christian.

Clements was known not only for his music, but also as the voice of Bashful, one of the Seven Dwarfs, in the Walt Disney animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. His ability to yodel allowed him to land the part when he auditioned in the '30s, said Ms. Christian.

He also appeared on the silver screen in such westerns as Santa Fe Stampede with John Wayne and Billy the Kid Returns with Roy Rogers.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Clements; a daughter, Sally Simpson, both of Nashville; a sister, Tressa Christian of Dora; and a brother, J.B. Clements of Pinson.
