Miss Phebe Gardner, a teacher for 53 years in the East side schools and until her retirement 8 years ago, principal of Beaupre school died this morning at 4:30 o clock at Copley Hospital. She was 80 years old and had been seriously ill for about two weeks.
In point of service, Miss Gardner at the time she retired was one of the oldest teachers in the country.
Miss Gardner began her teaching career in the Indian Creek school where she taught for several years She was transferred to the Young school where she spent the major portion of her teaching career. She later was made Principal of the old New York street school at the corner of New York and Smith streets. That school later became the Beaupre school of which Miss Gardner was principal when she retired at the age of 72.
Miss Gardner was born in the east, daughter of Mr & Mrs Luther Gardner. She came to Illinois with her parents when only 1 year old. The family first settled on a farm east of Aurora in DuPage county, where they lived only a short time. They moved from there to Aurora in 1856 to the residence at 614 Spring Street, where Miss Gardner had resided since.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, among whom are Harry H. Gardner and C. W. Hadlock, of Aurora. Mrs Phoebe L. Hayward of Vicksburg, Mich, Mrs. Mabel L. Ayer, of Na-Au-Say, and Ralph Gardner Slater of Quinualt, Wash.
