U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Monticello, Georgia. Entering politics, he was elected by the American Party to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving (1857-61). After leaving Congress, he was appointed collector of customs at Savannah in 1866 and register in bankruptcy in 1867, but declined both offices. After Georgia’s readmission to the Union, he was elected as a Republican Georgia’s first representative to the United States Senate, serving (1868-73). Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
