Evelyn was a genealogist in the 1950's and into the 80's before genealogy became popular via the internet. She taught genealogy several years. She and Jack taught square dancing during a period of time in which work was scarce for Jack, a carpenter.
They were active church members in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. Twice they served as Missionaries, once as a couple, and once with other companions. She was active in politics and in her children's schools where they were active in the
PTA Association for many years. She worked as a social worker for the Kern Co. Welfare Dept in Bakersfield, Kern, CA. After their divorce, she eventually settled in Beaumont, Riverside, CA where she lived many years. A diabetic in her later years, she lost her left leg to amputation in 1986 at the age of 72 and was in declining health for a number of years.

Mrs. Evelyn Hoagland Dennis, 83, of 8004 Masonboro Sound Road, Wilmington, died Sunday, November 16, 1997 at the Cornelia Nixon Davis Health Care Center.
Mrs. Dennis was born at Bakersfield, Calif., January 9, 1914, the daughter of the late Arthur Eugene and Maud Raner Hoagland. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had retired as a Social Worker in California.
Survivors include her daughter Marjorie of Wilmington; three sons, John A. Dennis III of Bakersfield, Calif,, William A. Dennis of Logan, Utah, James W. Dennis of Rexburg, Idaho; one brother Eugene Ross Hoagland of Sacramento, Califl; twelve grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 18, 1997 in the Coble Ward-Smith Chapel, by Bishop Chad Farris. The interment will be in Beaumont Cemetery at a later time. [Beaumont Cem is actually Mt. View Cemetery in Beaumont, Riverside, CA]
The family will receive friends at the Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service, Oleander Chapel tonight from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and at other times will be a the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Association of Physical Handicapped, c/o Pat O'Donnell, 308 ½ Parkway Drive, Wilmington, NC 28409.

Gravesite Details

There is an error in the engraving of her name which should have been May. They were supposed to have replaced it, but no word was received that this had been done.
