U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Franklin College, in 1816; studied law, admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Greensboro, Georgia. He was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1821-34) and a member of the Georgia State Senate, (1834-35). During the Florida Creek and Seminole War, he served in 1836, as a Captain in the U.S. Volunteers. In November 1836, he was elected as a State Rights candidate to the Twenty-fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John Coffee, reelected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth, Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1841. He was judge of the Ocmulgee circuit court 1845 and elected as a Whig to the United States Senate, serving (1849-55). He also was the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge Free Masons in Georgia, from 1843 until his death at age 86.
