Dr. Walther M. Barnard, Professor of Geosciences and Mace Bearer, and former chair of the Department of Geosciences at SUNY Fredonia died 1 January, 2010 after a brief illness. Born in 1937 in Hartford, Connecticut, he was 72 years old. Dr. Barnard joined the Fredonia Geology Department (later renamed Geosciences) faculty in 1964, serving a total of 45 years. He was also an affiliate member of the Department of Geology, University of Hawaii at Hilo. Receiving his Ph.D. in Mineralogy at the Pennsylvania State University in 1965, Dr. Barnard taught courses in Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Physical Geology, Meteorology, and Earth Science. During his career, Dr. Barnard published 47 professional monographs and oral presentations at Fredonia and was a member of 33 professional societies. Dr. Barnard's extensive field and laboratory studies of the Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanoes led to the publication of a three-volume sourcebook on the history of eruptions and explorations of Mauna Loa, and a comprehensive book devoted to the Hawaiian island of Kaho'olawe. He also published 53 articles on Barnard family history, the fruition of an avid personal interest in genealogy. As the longest serving active faculty member at SUNY Fredonia, Dr. Barnard was appointed to the status of "Mace Bearer" by SUNY Fredonia President Dennis Hefner in 2007. Dr. Barnard was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur R. and Florence Barnard, Sr. He is survived by two sisters, Arlene (Anthony) `Parlapiano and Louise J. (Moose) Hamilton, and two brothers, Arthur R. Barnard, Jr. and S. Edward Barnard as well as several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his extended family David J. (Theresa) Pacos, Jason (Jaclyn) Pacos, Amy Pacos, Joshua Pacos, Ronald M. (Debra) Pacos, Sarah (Christopher) Pacos, Albin E. (Jacqueline) Pacos, and Julianne V.(Nicholas) DiLorenzo. No visitation will be held. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Walther M. Barnard Scholarship Fund through the SUNY Fredonia College Foundation. Arrangements by the Newman Funeral Home in Dunkirk.
