EAST LIVERPOOL – CLIFFORD PAYNE, 78, of Winston Drive, died Sunday, October 9, 2011, at 2:45 p.m. at the Hospice House in Poland, Ohio following a lengthy illness.
Born in East Liverpool, September 25, 1933, he was a son of the late Chester and Nola Hoskins Payne. A resident of this area all his life, he was a member of the East Liverpool High School class of 1951.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he returned to the area and worked at the former McIntosh-Hemphill as a pattern maker until retiring in 1982 after 30 years of service. For over 50 years he operated Payne Bookkeeping Service and he also was the clerk for Liverpool Township for 16 years.
He attended the Greenford Christian Church and was a member of the Elks Lodge 258 as well as the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association. Golf and playing cards were favorite past-times of his; he shot a hole in one 17 times throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Burt Payne, at home. The couple married June 30, 1956.
Other survivors include two daughters, Brenda Highley of Columbiana and Alta Marshall, and her husband Don, of Dover, Ohio, along with two sons, Mike Payne, and his wife Lynn, of Wintersville, and Jeff Payne, and his wife Luci, of Stow, Ohio.
There is one brother, Cletus Payne, and his wife Leona, of East Liverpool, and four grandchildren, Jon-Michael Payne, Nathan Payne, Lisa Highley and Morgan Highley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Kenneth Payne, three sisters, Robin Kerill, Elva Barnett and Evelyn Hoschar, as well as a brother Chester Payne, Jr.
