Ballerina. A longtime star of Moscow's famed Bolshoi Ballet, she was later a respected teacher. Raised in the then Soviet capital, she studied at the Moscow Choreographic School prior to joining the Bolshoi in 1961. Nina was to remain with the company until 1988, dancing lead roles until around 1980. Over her career she was to perform in at least three Tchaikovsky works, "Sleeping Beauty", "Swan Lake", and the Christmas classic "The Nutcracker", as well as in Petipa's "Don Quixote", Boris Asatiev's French Revolution-themed "Flames of Paris", Adolphe Adam's "Giselle", and other works. She was also seen on the silver screen a few times and was to star in a 1974 feature based on Tolstoy's novel "Anna Karenina". Often honoured, she garnered Gold Medals at the 1966 Varna International Competition and the 1969 First International Moscow Competition and was named People's Artist of the Soviet Union in 1987. After leaving the Bolshoi Nina taught at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts and remained in Moscow where she died following a protracted illness.
