On August 11, 1901, John and Cora took their four daughters for a surry ride between Lexington, Virginia, and House Mountain. Eleven year old son Rodrick was visiting family in Baltimore, Maryland, so he was spared.
Tragically Cora and three of their daughters were drown when their surry capsized while crossing swollen Whistle Creek. John managed to pull himself from the creek and found little Linalie(3) washed up on the bank, crying. Only they survived.
