Johann Freund married 1. Anna Maria Augel, daughter of Michael Augel and Anna Catharina Schomish, on 25 September 1832 at St Valerius Catholic Church in Wanderath, Germany. Johann and Anna were the parents of four children known: Stephen, Peter, Johann and Mathias. Johann and his wife Anna, along with their sons, emigrated from Germany, his wife Anna died at sea on 11 July 1842, Johann and their sons arrived at Port of New York on 15 Aug 1842 aboard the ship Albany ~

Johann married 2. Maria Katharina Wagner, daughter of Nikolaus Wagner and Anna Katharina Steffens, on 6 May 1843, at the home of Nicholas Frett, the first couple to be married, in what would become known as Johnsburg, in McHenry County, Illinois ~ The marriage was recorded at St Mary's Catholic Church, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Johann and Maria were the parents of eleven children known: Anna Maria, Franz Heinrich, Peter, Anna Maria, Christina, Peter Joseph, Nicolaus Leopold, Peter Joseph, Gertrude S., Catharina and Elizabeth. ~

Johann married 3. widow, Anna Maria Heimer Kerling, daughter of Paul Heimer and Christina Daub, on 23 November 1867, at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, McHenry County, Illinois. Witnesses to their marriage were Joseph Bantes and Anton Meiler ~
