Consul was a son of Amroy Butterfield. C.W. was an attorney in Bucyrus (Crawford County), Ohio. He first married to Mira Scroggs; a daughter of John Scroggs and his wife, Ann Shawke. C.W. and Mira celebrated their marriage on May 8, 1854 in Crawford County, Ohio. They had one known daughter, Bertha. After Mira's untimely death, due to complications of childbirth. Consul remarried to the widow of James Reigheneker, Letta nee Merriman. C.W. and Lettie exchanged wedding vows on March 30, 1858 in Allen County, Ohio. They had ten known children; all dying in infancy except a daughter, Alice "Allie". C.W. and family moved to Wisconsin by the 1880 census and by 1900 was in Omaha (Douglas County), Nebraska. He began writing in late 1870's and continued to do so until his death in 1899.
