Ruth was the dau of David & Ruth (Coombs) Sweet. She grew up on the Cranberry Isles and later lived in Surry with her sister Abbie and Abbie's husband Sabin Lord. In the early 1850s she married Rev Andrew H. Mayhew of Rockland. He died Jan 25 1856 and Ruth moved to Portland & was working as a teacher there when the war began.Civil War Nurse

DIED IN ROCKLAND, ME., JUNE 22, 1875.

ONE OF THAT DEVOTED BAND OF WOMEN WHO SACRIFICED ALL
FOR THE GOOD OF THEIR COUNTRY AND THEIR FELLOW MAN.

MRS. MAYHEW WAS A NURSE IN THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC
LEAVING PORTLAND, MAINE FOR THE SEAT OF WAR JULY 9, 1863,
REMAINING "AT THE FRONT" UNTIL THE CLOSE OF THE WAR
AND ENTERING RICHMOND WITH THE ARMY.
