Laurin was the only child of Rev. Buron & Emma Baldwin, both of whom were ordained ministers of North Ohio. Until age 15, he moved with his parents, as they went from church to church.
He attended Tri State Normal, Hartsville,and Philomath, graduating from Philomath in 1895.
Laurin Burton Baldwin married Clara Metcalf on 29 December 1893 in California. They had three children: Neil born 13 February 1895 in Oregon, Ayne Reuben born 6 April 1897 in Indiana and Weir Emerald on 3 June 1899 in Illinois.
Laurin was a teacher at Hartsville College in Indiana, 1896-1897. He was president of Edwards College in Washington, 1899-1901 and an English instructor at Oregon State College from 1906-1947.
Laurin was also a minister in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ for many years. In 1933 he was elected Bishop for the Pacific Coast District, serving until 1937. He received an Honorary Degree from Huntington College (now University) in Indiana.
His health failed him in the latter years. Rev. E.C. Carlson officiated at the funeral.
