James Sevier was born at Watauga settlement, Washington Co. TN, to Valentine Sevier Jr. b 1747 Va. was the nephew to John Sevier, the governor of Tennessee. In the 1700's the boundaries changed often between Kentucky, Tenn. and Virginia. He married in 1798 to Susannah Warren. The marriage bond was signed by James' brother, John, and made out to Gov. John Sevier, James' uncle. He and Susannah had the following children:

1. Elizabeth Douglass Sevier b 1801
2. Rebecca Sevier b 1803
3. Sarah Sevier b 1805
4. Mary E. Sevier b 1807
5. Charles William Sevier b 1810
6. Thomas Holland Sevier b 1812
7. Valentine James Sevier b 1814
8. Alexander Sevier b 1816
9. John Rector Sevier b 1818
10. Martha Jane Sevier b 1820
11. Robert W. Sevier b 1822
12. Samuel Edward Sevier Sr. 1825

James served in the War of 1812, and is buried in a large above ground crypt.
