US Army Brigadier General, American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on September 1, 1893 for his actions as a 1st lieutenant with Horse Battery M, 2nd US Artillery, US Army on July 24, 1863, at Newby's Crossroads, Virginia. The son of a US Army officer, he received an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point, New York and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant with the 2nd US Artillery at Washington DC, following the outbreak of the American Civil War in April 1861. He saw combat action at the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Trevilian Station, and the Battle of Cold Harbor. He remained in the US Army after the end of the war and was promoted up the ranks to brigadier general, retiring at that rank in 1903. He died at the age of 71. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "While in command of a section of a battery constituting a portion of the rear guard of a division then retiring before the advance of a corps of Infantry, Woodruff was attacked by the enemy and ordered to abandon his guns. Lt. Woodruff disregarded the orders received and aided in repelling the attack and saving the guns."
