French miliitary officer and Imperial Marshal.King of Sweden and Norway, also named Karl XIV Johan. He was Carl III John of Norway. Once one of the most trusted generals of Emperor Napoleon I of France, he was born in Pau, France, as Jean Bernadotte, soon called Jean Baptiste. When he was created Prince of Ponte-Corvo in Italy by Napoleon he added Jules to his names as an imperial courtesy. He was elected Crown Prince of Sweden in 1810 and was adopted, with another new name, by the childless King Carl XIII of Sweden. Carl John was crowned King of Sweden and Norway after Carl's death in 1818. He had married Miss Désirée Clary, once Napoleon's first love, who now became Queen Desideria. Instrumental in the formation of the alliance which defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, he has been accused, especially by Bonapartists, of disloyalty to his old benefactor. Having successfully negotiated the treaty by which Sweden in 1814 once again was united with its 'brotherland' Norway, he and his son and two grandsons were to be successive kings of both nations until 1905. Without ever learning to speak Swedish or Norwegian, but ably assisted by his intimate friend Count Magnus Brahe, King Carl John had a personally directed reign on the Scandinavian Peninsula which was one of uninterrupted peace and prosperity, investing considerably of his own funds. The Bernadotte Dynasty he founded is still on the throne in Sweden (2016).
