Luther Crawford, Esquire, was born on 25 February 1772 in Union, Tolland County, Connecticut and he was the first born son of a Revolutionary War veteran Mr. Samuel Crawford (1748-1824) and Sarah Work (1750-1793). Luther was the first born son of 13 children. (See "Barbour Collection" Connecticut, Town Marriage Records, pre-1870; Connecticut, Hale Cemetery Inscriptions and Newspaper Notices, 1629-1934).

Luther Crawford, age 20, married Miss Elizabeth Wilbur (1773-1855) on 14 June 1792. Luther and Elizabeth were the parents of ten (10) children:
1. Sarah (1792-1841)
2. Benjamin (1794-1863)
3. Willard (1796-1854)
4. Randall (1798-1865)
5. Margaret (1800-1820)
6. Almira (1802-1889)
7. Eliza (1804-1817)
8. Lucien (1807-1827)
9. Newton (1809-1890)
10. Theresa (1812-1813)

All ten children were born in Union, Tolland County, Connecticut where Luther and Elizabeth were residents until around 1836 when they moved to East Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. (See 1800-1830 United States Federal Censuses for Union, Connecticut; 1840-1850 United States Federal Censuses; and 1836, 1838, 1839 Cuyahoga County, Ohio Tax Records).

Luther died on 20 February 1853 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was survived by his wife Elizabeth and their children Benjamin, Willard, Randall, Almira, and Newton. He was also survived by his siblings John (1777-1863), Samuel Jr. (1779-1858), Honorable Ingoldsby Work Crawford (1786-1867), and Charles (1796-1864).

Luther was preceded in death by five children Sarah, Margaret, Eliza, Lucien, and Theresa; his parents; and eight of thirteen siblings

Height 6'2", "straight"; Jeffersonian Democrat; He held many town offices and represented the town in legislature several times. Quite wealthy. Broke his leg once Breakneck Woods; had a wonderful memory. (p. 324-325; See also p. 85, 502).
