Obituary, The Columbia Daily Tribune, January 22, 2008:

Nancy Madden Grice, 75, of Columbia, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, died peacefully Thursday morning, Jan. 17, 2008, in her home in Columbia.

A celebration of Nancy's life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Country Club of Missouri. All are invited to attend.

Nancy's social schedule was always packed. She enjoyed her friends, playing bridge and taking vacations. She spent a good amount of time with her family and really enjoyed visits with her wonderful grandsons in Santa Barbara, Calif. The last few years of her life were particularly joyful and full of adventure. Nancy Grice enjoyed being busy; whether driving to Glasgow or flying to France, she was "ready to go!"

Born in Kansas City in 1932 as Nancy Lee Cater, she attended Notre Dame de Sion and later graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in 1950. She attended the University of Kansas. In 1956, she married Jean Madden, with whom she had two children, Mark and Kelly.

In the late 1970s, Nancy managed Harzfelds clothing store. She was always very fashionable and well turned out.

Nancy was active in the Cecile Circle of King's Daughters and Chapter IT of PEO. She was active in her sorority, Delta Gamma, and also in the University of Missouri Alumni Association. She was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church.

She loved living in Columbia, where she had many of the same dear friends for 50 years. She was also very loyal to the university. This tradition began in her 20s, when she moved to Columbia and worked in Jesse Hall, and continued her whole life as she attended games, events and concerts. She loved basketball and football and MU sports in general.

She will be remembered by all as a generous and gracious woman who loved her life and lived it to the fullest.

She is survived by her son, Mark Madden, daughter-in-law Karen Madden and grandsons Ryan Madden and Tyler Madden; daughter Kelly Madden, son-in-law Rick Treleaven; and stepchildren Bernie Grice Jr. and Nancy Underwood; stepgrandchildren Jenny Shelley, Lauren and Heather; and nieces and nephews in Missouri and California.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made to The Cecile Taylor Sheldon Fund, 7 Bingham Road, Columbia, Mo., 65203; or Direct Relief International, 27 S. La Patera, Santa Barbara, Calif., 93117.
