Howard was born and raised in Kentucky. He served in the US Air Force during WW II, and reached the rank of Sergeant. He met and married Trula "Joy" Vanover at Northwest Church of Christ in Detroit. They raised four children.
Howard suffered from schizophrenia. This illness made it a hard life for Howard and his family. He died at the age of 64 years.
Two sons have since tragically passed away.
