Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at St. Mathias Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph Sia will officiate. Interment will be in Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Gertrude Merrill Memorial Fund. Garden Ridge Funeral and Cremation Services is assisting the family.
Mrs. Merrill was born November 23, 1922, at Fruitland, the daughter of William and Gertrude Flake Westerman. She married Harlen J. Merrill on April 1, 1939, in Muscatine. He preceded her in death in 2007.
She worked at Huttig Manufacturing Company and at the Muscatine Journal as an inserter.
She enjoyed bowling and was the city champ for two consecutive years. She also liked to go camping. She was known for making the very best fried chicken.
She is survived by one daughter, Joan Fuegen and husband, Verne, of Muscatine; nine grandchildren, Pam Brown, Sherry Rakestraw, Lisa Dugan, Craig Merrill, Kathy Hines, Tim Fuegen, Jeff Fuegen, Beth Hanna and Matt Fuegen; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, Ronnie Lee Merrill and Charles Edward Merrill, six brothers and one sister.
