SACRAMENTO, California - Jess Willard Boyd, 87, a former resident of Muscatine, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at the Kaiser South Hospital, Sacramento, Ca.

Services are 1 p.m. Monday at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Dr. Pam Saturina of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Boyd was born March 18, 1915, in Conesville, the son of Hugh and Carrie Boyd. He married Venita Dickey July 4, 1944, in Muscatine.

He was a United States Army veteran receiving a medical discharge in 1943. The family moved to California in 1956.

He worked at TRC Helicopter in Southern California until retiring to Northern California in 1980, where he enjoyed making wine, working in his fruit orchard, putting around his yard and spending time with his great-grandchildren.

There are no words to describe the joy that Jess has given his family and friends. Jess was honest, hardworking, caring, loving man with a sense of humor that always left a smile. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Venita Boyd of Ca.; three children, Cheryl Johnson of Ca., Douglas Boyd of Columbus Junction and Steven Boyd of Fredonia; six grandchildren, Lesa Russell of Washington, Gena Foreman of Ca., Michael Femenia of Ca., Kristina Boyd of Arizona, Dawn Boyd of Washington and Anna Boyd of Fredonia; five great-grandchildren, Ty and Taylor Anne Foreman of Ca. and Mathew, Hannah and Zoe Russell of Washington and two sisters, Caroline Hesseltine of Columbus Junction and Ethel Campbell of Prophetstown, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Janet Sue Boyd; a sister, Leona; and brothers, Frank, Willie, Joe and Don Boyd.
