Private, Company F, 7th US Cavalry. Killed in action at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, in which all of the other soldiers in his column were also killed.

He enlisted on 16 August 1876, in Boston, Massachusetts, giving his previous occupation as stonemason. He had blue eyes, brown hair, a dark complexion, and was 5 feet 9 inches tall. He was killed on Last Stand Hill, along with all of the soldiers of Custer's Column, and was initially buried where he fell. In 1878, the bodies of the soldiers were removed from their field burials and reinterred in a mass grave at the top of Last Stand Hill, where his body remains today. He is also listed in other papers as Richard Sanders.
