Regimental Sergeant Major, 7th US Cavalry. Killed in action during Custer's Last Stand by Sioux and Cheyenne Indians at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, along with most of the 7th Cavalry.

He enlisted at age 21 on 21 March 1865 in New York City, giving his previous occupation as Clerk. Initially assigned to Company C, 2nd US Cavalry, he was discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on 21 March 1868, upon expiration of his service. He reenlisted on 12 August 1869 at Fort Leavenworth and was assigned to the 7th Cavalry. He was appointed Sergeant Major on 16 April 1872, replacing Joseph B. Ferguson, who retired. He had blue eyes, light brown hair, and was 5 feet, 8 inches tall. He was killed on Last Stand Hill, along with all of the soldiers of Custer's Column, and was initially buried where he fell. In 1878, the bodies of the soldiers were removed from their field burials and reinterred in a mass grave at the top of Last Stand Hill, where his body remains today. He was not married.
