Private, Company C, 7th US Cavalry. Killed in action by Sioux Indians at Custer's Last Stand, along with all of the other soldiers in that column.

He enlisted on 6 September 1875, at age 21, in Boston, Massachusetts, giving his previous occupation as hostler (caretaker of horses and mules). He had gray eyes, brown hair, a ruddy complexion, and was 5 feet, 6 inches tall. He was killed on Last Stand Hill, along with all of the soldiers of Custer's Column, and was initially buried where he fell. In 1878, the bodies of the soldiers were removed from their field burials and reinterred in a mass grave at the top of Last Stand Hill, where his body remains today. He was not married. His mother, Ellen Shea, received a pension of $12 per month until her death on 1 October 1894.
