World War II Medal of Honor recipient. Served as a Sergeant U.S. Army, Company M, 35th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division at the battle for Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. On January 13, 1943, near Mount Austen his machinegun section was attacked by a superior number of Japanese which put most of his crew out of action. Ordered to withdraw from the position, he refused and rushed forward to a idle gun. With the aid of another soldier who joined him, they opened fire and inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy. While engaged both soldiers were killed, but their defensive was a decisive factor in the following success of the attacking battalion. Both men were awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.
