World War II Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. Served as a Sergeant U.S. Army, Company B, 305th Infantry, 77th Infantry Division at the battle of Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands. On May 15 and 16, 1945 near Ishimmi, his platoon was stopped by deadly Japanese fire from a defended ridge. Alone he charged the enemy and drove them into the open where his squad shot them down. The next day, the enemy counterattacked to retake the position. As he moved into his foxhole shared with two other men, an enemy attacker threw a grenade amidst them. He quickly threw himself over it, sacrificing his life to save his comrades.
