Hamilton was mortally wounded in the hip by gunfire on June 1st, 1864 on the first day of the Battle of Cold Harbor. He died June 18th, 1864 at Armory Square Hospital, Washington, District Of Columbia and was buried in Grave 9, Range 4, Block 1, Section B in Arlington Cemetery. He served as a private in Co. B. 10th Vermont Volunteers.

He was the son of James and Mary Lucy Hannaford of Peterborough, NH.
