Norman David Begly, 94, of Orrville, formerly of the Smithville area, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at Shady Lawn Health Care Community in Dalton.

Norman was born on June 21, 1917, in Chester Township, to the late John and Mary (Lehman) Begly and married Martha Kilmer on Feb. 12, 1941, in Rittman.

He worked as a tractor mechanic for Sterling Farm Equipment for 35 years. Following his retirement, he continued working in machining and engine repair for several local businesses.

Norman was a charter member of Wooster Mennonite Church and most recently a member of Oak Grove Mennonite Church near Smithville. He was also a member of the Smithville Ruritan Club. He enjoyed volunteering with his wife at MCC Connections in Kidron, talking about tractors and traveling, especially to Oregon.

Surviving are his wife of more than 70 years, Martha Begly of Orrville; two daughters, Karen (Terry) Cowan of Bend, Ore., and Louise (Richard) Crilow of Fredericksburg; two sons, John (Doris) Begly of Smithville, and Merle Begly of Wooster; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Nettie Lytle of Dalton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandchild; four brothers, Floyd, Homer, Olen, and Forrest Begly; and a sister, Viola Zimmerman.

A memorial service will be held at Oak Grove Mennonite Church near Smithville on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at 11 a.m., with the Revs. Norma Duerksen and Doug Zehr officiating. A family burial will take place at the church cemetery prior to the service.
