Frontier Explorer and Scout. Served in the Union Army during the Civil War and finished his enlistment west and soon began trapping and hunting along Yellowstone River, Montana. It was there he learned the Sioux language and began scouting for the military. He scouted for George Forsyth in 1873 on a mission along the geyser basin hot springs, known today as Yellowstone Park. Chief of Scouts for General Nelson Miles from 1876 to 1878 serving at Wolf Mountain (Pyramid Butte) and Tongue River battles. He was part of the military chase of the Nez Perce at Cow Island and Bear Paw Mountains. Later he guided two expeditions in Alaska and served as a captain of volunteers in the Philippines. His last assignment was as an agent on the San Carlos Indian Reservation and he later retired in California where he died. His last request was to be buried at the summit of Kelly Mountain in Billings Montana overlooking the land he scouted and loved.
