Served in Capt. Sylvanus Smith's Company, 15th Massachusetts Regiment (Col. Bigelow). Was present at Saratoga, Valley Forge, Monmouth, and Aquidneck Island (Defense of Newport, RI).

After the Revolutionary War, Elijah settled in Langdon, Cheshire County, NH. He came to Covington, PA about 1809.

By 1818, when he applied for a pension for his war service, Elijah said he was crippled. He was also impoverished from his land speculations.
