HANSEL.-Aaron Hansel, one of the oldest and best known of the pioneer residents in the eastern part of the county, passed away at his home in Monroe township at one o'clock p.m. Tuesday afternoon, October 12, 1909, after an illness of three weeks. Death was caused by inflammation of the bladder. The funeral will be held at the family home in Monroe township Thursday morning at ten o'clock. Interment in Bedwell cemetery. Aaron Hansel came to Iowa when a mere boy, seventy-one years ago and to Mahaska county in 1840, sixty-nine years ago and has been a constant resident since that early date. He is the last of a large family of brothers who came from the east in the early day and all lived and prospered in Mahaska county. There were Sam, whose son U. S. Hensel, resides near Leighton; Aaron, Henry and George, all of whom, with the death of Aaron, have passed to the other side. He was 78 years 9 months and 12 days of age at the time of his death. The surviving members of the immediate family are Mrs. Martha Hornback, of What Cheer, Mrs. Euphemia Robbins, Mrs. Jeanette Lundy and Charles Hensel, of Monroe township. Other relatives residing in Ohio are John, George and Susanna Whitmore. Aaron Hansel was known throughout the length and breadth of Mahaska and Keokuk counties. He was formerly active in politics and has been in many offices in the government of his home community. The brothers formerly owned some of the finest farms in the township and the county. They were sociable and hospitable people, hard workers and dependable at all times. The death of this old pioneer again emphasizes the fact the old settlers, the first owners of Mahaska county farms, are rapidly passing. The original Hansel farm consisted of one hundred and sixty acres and it is still held by members of the family.

Son of John George Hansel & Susiana WHITMORE Hansel
