COLUMBUS- IRMA JEAN (WACKER) LINE, age 88, of Columbus, left this life Thursday, October 6, 2011 with family by her side.

She was born June 22, 1923, the youngest of six children, to the late Louis and Mabel (Custar) Wacker of LaGrange. Irma graduated from Elyria High School in 1940. She married the late Col. Albert B. Line of North Ridgeville in 1948.

Following high school, Irma joined thousands of young women that became known as "Rosie the Riveter" who worked in factories to replace men that had been called to duty. In 1944, she served her country as a member of U.S. Navy WAVES at Anacostia Naval Air Station in Washington D.C. until 1946.

After the war, Irma returned to Lorain County and began taking flying lessons from a former Army Air Corps fighter pilot, Al Line. She acquired her wings and later raced in the transcontinental air race for women pilots known as the Powder Puff Derby, with her new husband as navigator. When Al accepted a post with the Ohio Air National Guard in Mansfield in 1950, the young couple moved to Richland County, and then to the Lexington area in 1961 where her husband preceded her in death in 1972.

Irma was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Mansfield. Devoted to her family; her grandchildren were her great joy. She was a lover of pets, nature and sunny days. She enjoyed reading, writing and visiting with old friends whom she always left in better spirits.

Irma is survived by four children, Robert (Ann) Line of Dover, DE, Karen (John) Georgiadis of Columbus, Gary (Alda) Line of Hobe Sound, FL, and Janet (Herb) Hodgman of Plantation, FL; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her sister Alice Amenhauser of Elyria.

Visitation will be held Thursday October 13, 2011 from 1-3 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where funeral services will begin at 3pm. The Rev. David Root will officiate. Burial with military honors performed by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will follow in Lexington Cemetery. A reception for friends and family following graveside services will be held at the Lexington Depot.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations in Irma's memory be made to either the SPCA or the Alzheimer's Association of Columbus and may be made through the funeral home.
