US Congressman, North Carolina Governor. Born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, he was a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives, (1840-50), comptroller of the North Carolina State, (1857-67), appointed collector of internal revenue in 1869 and a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1868-72). He was Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina in 1872, when seated as the 42nd State Governor upon the death of Governor Caldwell, in 1874, serving until 1877. In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving until 1979. He was again elected to the North Carolina State House of Representatives, serving (1886-88). He died at age 84 in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
