U.S. Congressman. A successful planter, he served as clerk of Court of Stokes County, North Carolina, for thirty years. He also served as member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, (1819-23) and served in the North Carolina State Senate, (1823-25, 30-31). In 1839, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving until 1831. After leaving Congress, he was reading clerk in the North Carolina State Senate in 1850 and delegate to the North Carolina State constitutional convention, in 1861.
