A graduate of Syracuse University in 1876 and the law school in 1879 he was a junior partner in the firm of Goodelle & Nottingham until 1907 when he opened a firm with his brother Edwin. He organized over fifty concerns including interurban railway companies, steamship companies, the Globe Transportation Company of Seattle. He was a director of Syracuse Trust Company and Commercial National Bank. He lectured on corporate law at S.U. and was a trustee of the university until his election to the Board of Regents for New York State. He received a Master of Arts in 1877, a Doctor of Philosophy in 1878 and Doctor of Laws in 1903.
On October 26, 1881 he married Eloise Holden, daughter of Erastus F. Holden.
