In memory of
Charles Carter
who departed this life the 9th day of May 1827
in the 63rd year of his age
Greatly beloved by all who knew him and mostly by those who knew him best.

In a burial ground scores the meadow from the home site, overgrown with weeds
and perhaps forgotten, rest the remains of Charles Carter, who married George
Washington's sister's daughter.

A tradition prevails along the banks of the Staunton River that in the year 1791
General Washington was the honor guest at a fox hunt given by citizens of that
section. On this occasion one of the host, Reuben Thornton became entangled in
some debris in the river and he and his horse were drowned. This tradition
seems to have a substantial background, as we know from General Washington's
diary, that he made a visit through this section of Virginia. He may have
visited at "Deerwood" as this land was owned by him and Peter Jefferson, and was
sold to Charles Carter, who married the oldest daughter of Betty Washington
Lewis, his only sister's daughter.

(he married Betty Lewis daughter of Colonel Fielding and Mrs. Betty Washington Lewis. Charles and Betty Carter only lived for a while at "Deerwood" the farm on the Roanoke River.)
