Charles and Mary Barry Moore, Sr., had ten children: Margaret, Alice, Rosanna, Thomas, Mary, Rachel, Violet, Elizabeth, Andrew Barry, and Charles Moore, Jr. Primary records show only one of their children with a middle name and that is their son Andrew Barry Moore, M.D. Daughter Margaret was also called "Peggy" and daughter Rosanna was also called "Rosa".

Margaret Moore and Andrew Barry had 11 children: John Barry, an infant daughter, Mary Moore "Polly" Barry, Charles Moore Barry, Catherine Porter "Katy" Barry, Margaret Rosanna Barry, Violet Moore Barry, Andrew Barry Jr., Richard Barry, Hugh William Barry, and Alice Lawson Barry.

Stories about a legendary Revolutionary heroine, written long after her death, call Margaret Moore Barry as "Kate" and suggest mistakenly that her middle name was Catherine or Katherine. There are no records from Margaret's lifetime or immediately following her death to support the nickname Kate or a middle name Catherine or Katherine.

Contemporary public records show the name of Margaret Moore Barry
as "Margaret Barry" and "Peggy Barry". The Bible records of her son
Charles Moore Barry's family show her also as "Margaret Barry".

The Will of her husband Andrew Barry, signed 5 May 1809, proved 7 Oct. 1811,
Spartanburg County, South Carolina, Will Book A, pages 18-20.
..."unto my wife Peggy"... "my wife Peggy" named as Executrix of his will.
He also refers to "my daughter Catey", among other children named.

Her own will shows her name as "Margaret Barry":
Spartanburg District, South Carolina, Will Book B, pages 51-53: "Will of Margaret Barry..."
Signed "Marg. Barry" 24 Sept 1823

Spartanburg County Ordinary's Journal, page 105, 17 March 1825.
"Granted a Citation to Andrew Barry to prove the Will of Margaret Barry Decd. to be
returned on Wednesday next."

Her original gravestone lists her name as "Margaret".
"Sacred to the memory of Our MOTHER Margaret Barry who departed this life Sept. 29 1823 aged 71 Years" (A recent DAR plaque attached to the reverse of the stone calls her "Kate".)

A Barry family Bible record (for the family of her son Charles Moore Barry)
shows "Margaret Barry" with her date of death.

So where did the idea that Margaret Moore Barry was ever called "Kate" originate? It apparently began with the legendary stories written about her and other Revolutionary War heroes many years later.
One such legend also mentions Margaret's daughter Catherine (called "Catey" in her father Andrew's 1809 will). "The name of Kate Barry is also surrounded by a tradition of other heroic deeds. In one of these stories, Kate heard Tory soldiers coming across the Tyger River near her father's house. She tied her two-year-old daughter, Catherine, to the bedpost, and rode to her husband's unit for help." Perhaps a confusion of Margaret's and her daughter Catherine's names was the origin of calling the mother "Kate"?
