Roy had an insurance business in Phoenix and sold groceries for a Chicago firm.

03 May 1917 Roy and his wife Florence left from visiting family in Globe and were on the way to Tucson via the Apache Trail to visit friends. They camped for the night on the Trail and were preparing supper when Star Daley rode up on a horse. After being welcomed and given water, Star shot Roy in the back 4 times with a .32. He stood over the body and shot Roy 2 more times. He raped Florence throughout the night. The next morning he loaded Roy's body and Florence in thier car and took off toward Mesa, running out of gas before arrival. He left Florence in the car and set out on foot to find gas. Florence alerted a passerby to contact the sheriff. Daley was arrested before returning and was soon convicted of murder. A lynch mob took Daley and hung him from a telephone pole near the site of the crime on the Apache Trail. This was the last lynching in Arizona.
