Aged and Respected Citizen of Jasper County Passes Away
Father of Mrs. Thos. Dease of Meridian

News has been received in this city of the recent death at Paulding, Jasper county, of Mr. Timothy O'Flinn, one of the mostly highly respected citizens of that community. Mr. O'Flinn was the father of Mrs. Thomas Dease, wife of the well known Mobile and Ohio engineer of Meridian. Mrs. Dease was summoned to the bedside of her father, but arrived after his death.

Mr. O'Flinn, at the time of his demise, which occurred on Feb. 15th, was in his 87th year, having been born in Ireland, Aug. 27th, 1818. When quite a young man he came to America and joined his two brothers, Daniel and Cornelius O'Flinn, who had already cast their fortunes in Smith county, Miss. He pursued his trade as a carpenter and wheelwright, and built many of the old fashioned water power mills used in ante-bellam days, besides supplying the surrounding plantation owners with the substantial family carriages used in those days. Shortly after his arrival in Smith county, Mr. O'Flinn met and married Miss Sarah Benison, who survives her husband in her 77th year. A few years after their marriage, which was nearly six decades ago, the then young couple moved over into Jasper county, where they have since lived together, thirty-five years of which time was in the house in which Mr. O'Flinn died.

Shortly after the outbreak of the civil war Mr. O'Flinn tendered his services to the confederacy and was in camp at Enterprise, but his age and state of health unfitted him for active service, and he returned to his home to furnish aid in other ways than fighting.

After the war and up until ten years ago, when feeble health confined him to the house, he successfully conducted his farm near Paulding. Mr. O'Flinn was a strict member of the Roman Catholic church, and no citizen of Jasper county stood higher for honesty, honor and general probity of character. Characteristic of his Irish blood, Mr. O'Flinn was a singularly tender hearted man, and his many acts of kindness to his neighbors when in distress, endeared him to every one in his community, as well as to many visitors who at times became recipients of his off hand charity. To his large family he was particularly close and devoted, it being said of him that when each of his seven daughters were married the father had a long period of depression, so distressed was he to lose them even by marriage.

The remains were taken to St. Michaels Catholic church at Paulding, where the deceased had worshiped, from whence interment was had in the pretty Catholic cemetery nearby. Rev. Fr. Finley of Laurel officiated at the service as he had previously administed the last sacraments of the church.

Besides the aged widow, Mr. O'Flinn leaves eight daughters and two sons to mourn his death. They are: Mrs. Nanie Cavanaugh, of Santee, Covington county; Mrs. Julia Fagan of Bassfield, Covington county; Mrs. Ann McDevitt, Mrs. Kate Hanley and Mrs. Ellen Lawless of Laurel; Mrs. Matilda Dease of Meridian; Mrs. Maggie Carr and Miss Martha O'Flinn of Paulding; John O'Flinn of Laurel and James P. O'Flinn of Paulding.

The death of Mr. O'Flinn which was due soley to old age is the first which has ever occurred in his immediate family.
