U.S. Senator. He graduated from Franklin College in 1900, taught in the public schools, advanced to principal of schools at Frankford, Selbyville, and Ocean View, Delaware (1903-07). After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1907, commenced to practice in Georgetown, Delaware and was president of the board of education of Georgetown (1919-32). In 1941, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1947. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a banker, owned and operated a number of farms in Sussex County, Delaware. He then retired to Pennsylvania, until his death.
