Born into the Methodist preacher family of Rev. Henry and Laura Mood, Dr. J. A. Mood graduated high school in Abbeville, S. C. ; and he was a graduate of Wofford College class of 1875 and then Med. College of S. C. class of 1879. He moved to Sumter in 1881. He served as a surgeon with rank of Major in the Spanish-American War. As detailed in the photo of a memorial, Dr. Mood was an extremely civic-minded Sumterite. In 1887, he became the first mayor of Sumter and held the office for three terms. He built Mood Infirmary which merged with the hospital in Sumter and thusly becoming Tuomey Hospital. He was the second longest serving member of the Sumter School Board (1893-1936...except when serving in the S-A War, above) which began with 4 men elected in 1888 (in 1912, the state legislature changed the composition to 5).
