At age 21, he held his first public office, an election official, and held this office for many years. Not long after his marriage in 1904, he purchased the hardware store in Madison that his father had, and owned/operated that until he retired. He was City Park Commissioner for 25 years, a member of Board of Health for 8 years and spent 2 years on the City Council. He was elected Alderman and was elected to the City Manager's System. He was elected to the Wisconsin Legislature, and was Representative of Madison for 6 years, and served in the State Assembly from 1933 to 1939. He was on Board of Education for 28 years, and its president for 11 years. He was also one of the organizers of the East Madison Building and Loan Company of Madison of which he was president for years. The companys first office was in his hardware store. Known as "Mr. East Side". He was a charter member and served as president of the East Side Business Men's Association. He was a member of the Madison Welfare Council, and was a director of the Madison Association of Commerce from 1932 - 1934. An elementary school was named for him in 1953 - Schenk Elementary School at 230 Schenk Street, Madison.
