The following was provided by Tim Cook:
Lieutenant Blessman was one of fifteen crew Killed In Action aboard U.S.S. Marblehead (CL-12) when the light cruiser was struck by Japanese dive bombers in the Java Sea.

Edward Martin "Eddie" Blessman born Dec. 29, 1907 in Nott, ND, grew up in his hometown of Appleton, Wis. Graduated June 4, 1931 from the U.S. Naval Academy. Promoted to lieutenant January 1939 and assigned to the USS Marblehead. He died February 4, 1942 during the battle of Maccassar Strait in Indonesia. Lieutenant Blessman, the ship's senior aviator, was in the wardroom when the ship was bombed and was killed instantly by the concussion. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart from a grateful nation, accepted on his behalf by his wife Mrs. Helen Malloy Blessman.
