The following account is from Carl Derrick, the grandson of Colonel Schock. He is the son of Col. Schock's daughter Marjorie Schock who was 13 when her father died. It details the bravery of Col. Schock in the face of the enemy!

His name was John Lloyd Schock. He was a Colonel and head of the dental corps in the Philippines at the time of the invasion. He was left behind as part of the 12000 Americans left to defend the Philippines when a much larger Japanese force took over and killed/captured many Americans/Filipinos.

He was forced to walk the Death March (some people spoke to Ro and my mother about their knowledge of him). He survived at Camp O'Donnell. He was put in charge of curing the ill, organizing rations, medicines etc. for the many many sick and dying soldiers.

When MacArthur returned the Japanese started to evacuate Americans to Japan, he had to choose which were fit for the trip in these "Hell Ships" (hulls for 200 with 600 crammed in) knowing that those left behind would likely be killed.

In the first outbound unmarked ship (that had a machine gun nest atop), it was sank by American bombers and he managed to escape the sinking ship (under fire from the machine gun nest) to swim ashore only to be recaptured.

On the second "Hell Ship" he was so weak, he was already under pneumonia conditions. The boat he was on was torpedoed by the US. Not sure whether he was already dead by the time the boat was hit, very few survived but he didn't. A building is named after him in Ft. Sam Houston Texas. He was posthumously decorated.
