Suggested edit: The son of Elias J. & Mary G. (McBride) Sheads, in 1860 he was a machinist living in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in West Chester, Chester County, June 8, 1861, mustered into federal service at Baltimore, Maryland, July 26 as a private with Co. During fighting near White Oak Swamp, Virginia, on June 13, 1864, a bullet passed through the left side of his face and exited the right side of his neck. Admitted to the hospital at David's Island, New York, he later transferred to the medical facility in York, Pennsylvania, where he discharged by surgeon's certificate to date November 9, 1864.
